During what appears to be a common hollow attack, Matsumoto is forced to protect the foul-tempered spirit of a child from an armadillo-like arrancar that sings a strange tune. After Ikkaku dispatches the arrancar, they forgo sending him to Soul Society in order to interrogate him. The child, named Shōta Toyokawa, is quite insisitent that he has something to do before leaving the real world, but won't say what. Matsumoto convinces Hitsugaya to wait a day before sending him to Soul Society. At night, Shōta attempts to steal Matsumoto's zanpakutō, but is caught by her. He reveals that he has to find someone, but is still evasive about just who it is. Before Matsumoto can press the issue, the supposedly-dead arrancar shows up once more.
